Christmas Cactus: Florists’ Trick to Make It Bloom in December

During the growing season, you will need to water the plant every week to ensure a fresh substrate. It should also be dry before adding more fertilizer. Don’t hesitate to use a liquid fertilizer rich in potash once a month.  Once flowering is over, remember to water the plant every 10 days . You can also place wet clay balls under your pot.

How to repot a Christmas cactus?

It is recommended to repot the Christmas cactus every three or four years, in spring. You will need to choose a suitable soil, namely a substrate for epiphytic cacti, composed of sand and fibrous heather.  It is not recommended to regularly move this plant, which thrives on contact with light , without being exposed to direct sunlight.

When should you prune the Christmas cactus?

There’s absolutely no need to prune this plant. If you wish, you can cut the stems right after flowering.  To enhance your Christmas cactus,  choose a pot with a contrasting color . Opt for a turquoise blue to better highlight the fuchsia flowers.

What to do if the Christmas cactus leaves are soft?

If you notice that the plant’s leaves are becoming limp, it’s probably due to a lack of watering. Just because it’s a cactus doesn’t mean it doesn’t need water.  In fact, the Christmas cactus blooms in fresh soil, like many indoor plants . It will therefore need to be watered when the surface of the soil is dry. However, avoid stagnant water, as this could cause its roots to rot.

By knowing the right steps to take, you’ll be able to make your Christmas cactus bloom well. So remember to water it, prune it, and maintain it properly.
