Getting Started
What You’ll Need
Avocado Pit or Seedling: You can grow from a seed or purchase a young avocado tree.
Pot: Choose a large pot with good drainage, at least 12–18 inches in diameter.
Soil: Well-draining potting mix, preferably one designed for citrus or tropical plants.
Fertilizer: Balanced fertilizer or one formulated for fruit trees.
Sunny Spot: Avocado trees need at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Step-by-Step Guide to Growing Avocados in Pots
Step 1: Starting with a Seed (Optional)
Remove and Clean the Seed: Take the pit from a ripe avocado and rinse it. Be gentle to avoid removing the brown skin.
Suspend in Water: Insert 3-4 toothpicks into the pit and suspend it over a glass of water, ensuring the bottom (wider end) is submerged.
Wait for Sprouting: Place the glass in a warm spot with indirect sunlight. In 4–6 weeks, roots will emerge, followed by a sprout.
Transplant: Once the sprout is about 6 inches tall, plant it in a pot filled with soil, leaving the top of the seed exposed.
Step 2: Planting a Seedling or Young Tree
