Here’s What Sleeping on Our Left Side Does to Our Brain, Stomach, and Glymphatic System

During pregnancy, midwives often recommend sleeping on your left side. Why? Because it promotes blood circulation to the placenta and relieves pressure on internal organs like the liver. It’s also a position that allows for better breathing and reduces the feeling of heavy legs.

How can you adopt this habit without struggling?

It’s not always easy to change your sleeping position when you’re used to it. Here are some simple tips:

  • A good pillow : neither too flat nor too inflated, to support the neck without creating tension.
  • A pillow between the knees : this aligns the hips and prevents pelvic pain.
  • A body pillow : perfect for curling up and preventing nighttime tossing and turning.
  • The tennis ball method : Sewn to the back of a t-shirt, it prevents you from lying on your back.
  • The sofa (temporarily)  : Its narrowness forces you to sleep on your side. A trick to try for a few nights.

What if it’s not for you?

Of course, every body is unique. Sleeping on your left side isn’t ideal for everyone, especially with a mattress that’s too hard or too soft. This can put pressure on your shoulder or hip. The key? Alternate sides, adjust the mattress firmness, and choose a pillow that suits your body shape.

A simple habit like turning to the left when you go to sleep could be the catalyst for more peaceful nights and a body that says thank you when you wake up.  So, tonight, why not give it a try?
