Homemade Donuts Recipe

1. Prepare the Dough:
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, vanilla extract, remaining sugar, salt, and eggs. Stir well.
Add the foamy yeast mixture to the bowl and mix to combine.
Gradually add the flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
2. Let the Dough Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
3. Shape the Donuts:
Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.
Use a round cutter (about 3 inches in diameter) to cut out donuts. For the centers, use a smaller cutter (about 1 inch).
Transfer the donuts and donut holes to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
4. Fry the Donuts:
Heat the oil in a large, deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
Carefully lower a few donuts into the oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
Fry for 1–2 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

For the classic glaze, whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.
For the chocolate glaze, whisk powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and milk together until smooth.
Dip the warm donuts into your glaze of choice and add sprinkles or nuts if desired. Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.
