How to Grow a Kiwi in a Pot: Step-by-Step Guide
Kiwi plants are not only beautiful and rewarding to grow but also provide delicious, nutrient-packed fruit. Growing kiwi in a pot is an excellent option for those with limited space. Follow this step-by-step guide to grow your own kiwi plant in a pot successfully.

Step 1: Choose the Right Kiwi Variety
Hardy Kiwi (Actinidia arguta): Smaller fruit, cold-tolerant, and great for pots.
Fuzzy Kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa): Larger, traditional kiwis, suitable for warmer climates.
Self-Pollinating Varieties: If space is limited, choose a self-pollinating variety like ‘Jenny.’ Otherwise, grow one male and one female plant for cross-pollination.
Step 2: Select the Right Pot
Size: Choose a pot at least 18–24 inches in diameter and depth. Kiwi plants have extensive root systems, so the larger the pot, the better.
Material: Use a sturdy container with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
Trellis Support: Kiwis are climbing plants. Attach a trellis, stake, or bamboo poles to the pot for the plant to climb as it grows.
Step 3: Prepare the Soil
Type: Kiwi plants prefer well-draining, fertile soil. Use a mix of potting soil, compost, and perlite or sand for aeration.
pH Level: Ensure the soil is slightly acidic (pH 5.5–7.0).
Fertilizer: Add a slow-release, balanced fertilizer rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
Step 4: Plant the Kiwi
Fill the pot halfway with the prepared soil mixture.
Place the kiwi plant or seedling in the pot, ensuring the root ball is just below the soil line.
Fill the pot with soil, leaving about 1–2 inches from the top.
Press gently to firm the soil and water thoroughly.
Step 5: Position the Pot
