How to Grow and Maintain a Christmas Cactus

Ideal Light: Bright, indirect sunlight is best. Direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light may prevent blooming.
Indoor Placement: Place it near a north or east-facing window. If using a south or west-facing window, ensure it’s shaded by a sheer curtain.
Outdoor Placement: In warmer months, it can be placed outside in a shady spot, but bring it indoors before temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C).
Temperature

Optimal Range: Prefers temperatures between 60–70°F (15–21°C).
Encouraging Blooms: A slight drop in nighttime temperatures (55–60°F or 13–15°C) and short daylight hours in autumn help trigger bud formation.
Humidity

Why It’s Important: Native to tropical rainforests, the Christmas cactus loves humidity.
How to Increase Humidity:
Place the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water (ensure the pot’s base isn’t sitting directly in the water).
Mist the plant occasionally or keep it in a room with a humidifier.
Soil

Preferred Mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. Use a cactus or succulent mix, or combine regular potting soil with sand or perlite.
Pot Size: Christmas cacti bloom better when slightly root-bound. Don’t repot too often—every 2–3 years is sufficient.
