How to Quickly Remove Soot from Clothes

Take the garment outside and give it a gentle shake to remove as much loose soot as possible. If you’re indoors, do this over a trash bag or sink to contain the mess.
3. Apply Baking Soda or Cornstarch

Sprinkle baking soda, cornstarch, or talcum powder over the stained area.
Let it sit for a minute or two.
These powders absorb the oily residue in soot and make it easier to lift.
4. Use a Vacuum or Soft Brush

Gently vacuum the powder off the fabric using the upholstery attachment of your vacuum cleaner.
Alternatively, use a soft brush to lightly sweep the powder away.
This step should remove a significant portion of the soot without smearing it.
5. Clean with a Mild Detergent

Mix a small amount of mild detergent with lukewarm water.
Dip a clean, white cloth into the solution and gently dab at the stain.
Avoid using too much water, as it can spread the stain further.
6. Rinse and Pat Dry
