The following morning, I peeked through my curtains, coffee in hand. I had barely taken a sip when I saw her—Darlene, with her platinum blonde hair and perfectly applied lipstick—sneaking up to my porch. She looked around nervously, like a child caught reaching into the cookie jar.
I watched as she reached out. The moment she lifted the box, the barking erupted. She jumped back so fast I thought she’d twist her ankle. The box flew from her hands, and she stumbled backward, nearly landing in my rose bush.
