Leaves should be medium green.
Yellowish leaves mean too much light, while dark green leaves indicate insufficient light.
2. Watering
Water when the potting medium is nearly dry but not completely dry.
Typically, water every 7–10 days, depending on humidity and temperature.
Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain out. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water to prevent root rot.
3. Humidity
Maintain 50–70% humidity around the plant.
To increase humidity:
Use a humidifier.
Place a tray of water with pebbles under the pot (ensure the pot doesn’t sit in the water).
Group orchids together to create a humid microenvironment.
4. Temperature
Daytime: 70°F–85°F (21°C–29°C).
Nighttime: 55°F–65°F (13°C–18°C).
A slight drop in nighttime temperature is beneficial for encouraging blooms.
5. Potting Medium
Use a well-draining orchid mix, typically made of bark, charcoal, and perlite.
Avoid compacted or water-retentive mediums, as orchids require good airflow around their roots.
6. Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) at half strength every 2–3 weeks during active growth (spring and summer).
Reduce feeding during the dormant period (fall and winter).
7. Pruning and Maintenance
After blooming, trim the spent flower spike back to the base if it turns brown.
Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves with sterilized scissors.
