The Most Dangerous Sleeping Position You Never Knew You Had

Fortunately, there are certain postures that are much kinder to your body. Here are three to favor:

On your back – The “starfish position”: for overall rest

Lying on your back, arms and legs relaxed, this position:

  • Respects the natural alignment of the spine
  • Promotes muscle relaxation
  • Allows for deeper breathing
  • Relieves pressure on internal organs

It is one of the most recommended postures for  optimal physical recovery , particularly by osteopaths and physiotherapists.

On the left side – Your digestion’s ally

Sleeping on your left side has several advantages:

  • Improves digestion and  reduces acid reflux
  • Promotes better venous return to the heart
  • Is often recommended during pregnancy
  • Provides  greater comfort to people prone to digestive disorders

This is  the ideal position if you have a sensitive stomach  or restless sleep.

On the right side – Common, but use sparingly

Very widespread, this position is generally comfortable, but:

  • May slightly worsen gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Is  less effective for lymphatic drainage

It is still suitable if you are comfortable like this, provided you have  good lumbar and cervical support .

And you, what does your way of sleeping reveal?

According to some behavioral surveys:

  • Left side: calm profiles, aged 45 to 54
  • Right side: active people, often coffee lovers
  • On the stomach: stressed or anxious personalities
  • On the back (starfish): independent temperaments, rather morning people

Fun to observe… but also useful for getting to know yourself better.

Tips for sleeping better… in good posture

Changing positions isn’t always easy. Here are some tips to help you get used to it gradually:

  • Use an  ergonomic pillow  to relieve your neck pressure
  • Choose a  balanced mattress (neither too soft nor too firm)
  • If you sleep on your side, place  a pillow between your knees  to keep your pelvis aligned.
  • To move from the prone position, slide a  bolster or body pillow  in front of you

With a little perseverance, changing your posture can  transform the quality of your nights… and your days.
