They were both startled by a sudden flurry of movement just as the tension in the air seemed to be easing. All at once a great mass of birds lifted off, their wings thudding urgently as they dispersed across the sky.
The abrupt movement startled Jake, who flinched. “What did that do?” he whispered.
Mark held up a hand to tell Jake to keep quiet. They’re frightened. Something is happening or will happen soon.
As though the surrounding wildlife sensed something they didn’t, there was an electric quality to the energy in the air.
