Donuts: A Sweet Treat Made Simple

1. Prepare the Dough
In a small bowl, mix warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the remaining sugar, eggs, butter, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix well.
Add the yeast mixture to the bowl and gradually incorporate the flour. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. (You can use a stand mixer with a dough hook for ease.)
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
2. Shape the Donuts
Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface to about ½ inch (1.25 cm) thickness.
Use a donut cutter or two round cutters (one large, one small) to cut out the donuts and holes. Re-roll scraps to make additional donuts.
Place the cut donuts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
3. Fry the Donuts
Heat oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
Fry the donuts in batches, 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown. Don’t overcrowd the pot.
Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
4. Glaze and Decorate
In a bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency with more milk or sugar as needed.
Dip the warm donuts into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off. Add sprinkles, chocolate drizzle, or other toppings as desired.
Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.
